College of Urban Science

The College of Urban Science educates and conducts research in practical disciplines aimed at providing realistic solutions to the various and complex phenomena of urban environments.
The College of Urban Science was established in 1997 and serves as a think tank for solving the problems of large cities, including Seoul. It has positioned itself as a hub for education and research in the field of urban science. The college aims to avoid an over-reliance on Western logic in the areas of urban social studies, public finance, planning, design, and engineering. Instead, it seeks to establish a Korean paradigm that considers both our traditions and current realities through various interdisciplinary studies.
The ultimate goal is to cultivate urban managers with comprehensive thinking skills and community leaders who are deeply committed to social service.

Overview
School of Architecture (Architectural Engineering)
The School of Architecture's architectural engineering major (four-year program) has been innovatively restructuring its curriculum and framework since 2000 to internationalize, specialize, and integrate engineering education, with the goal of cultivating architect talents with global competitiveness.
The curriculum for the architectural engineering major is designed to cultivate architectural technicians with the skills required by society. It operates with detailed objectives that include a systematic understanding of architectural engineering based on integrated education from the first to the fourth year, enhancing comprehensive practical abilities, and project-based advanced education.
The main academic areas covered in Architectural Engineering include architectural structures, building environmental systems, construction management, and construction practices. Through specialized education and research in each major, students are provided with opportunities to learn about the entire construction process, from design to construction of buildings.
School of Architecture (Architecture)
The School of Architecture's architecture major (five-year program) boldly innovates the content and framework of architectural education in Korea since 2002. The curriculum has been adjusted to meet international standards, requiring a minimum of 164 credits for graduation as a five-year program.
The curriculum of the architecture major, which aims for creative, participatory, and international education, is structured into ten stages across the five years of study, with various design studios included. Apart from the design studios, theoretical and seminar courses are categorized into three areas historic culture and environmental cities, technology, and practical skills to support architectural design.
In addition to the regular curriculum, students participate in various international programs, including the Asia Coalition for Architecture and Urbanism (ACAU) with architecture schools from five Asian countries, the Seoul–Berlin International Exchange Exhibition, faculty and student exchange programs with the National University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture, architectural tours in Europe and Asia through the GLP program, and internships at overseas architectural firms. Furthermore, opportunities for diverse architectural experiences outside the official curriculum are provided through various domestic and international architectural activities, such as the Jeongam Architecture Award, housing construction volunteer work for marginalized communities, short-term design competitions, and regular special lectures in spring and autumn.
Department of Urban Engineering
The Department of Urban Engineering offers comprehensive disciplinary courses (pure sciences + applied sciences) that research methods for rational and efficient planning, development, and management of national land and urban spaces. The department provides education in planning and design that enhances both practicality and field relevance based on theoretical instruction.
Therefore, the department aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and methods to address various contemporary urban issues, including national land and urban development, housing, land use, transportation, environmental concerns, and real estate problems. It focuses on applying this knowledge comprehensively to cultivate professionals (planners) who can contribute to improving the quality of life for urban residents and achieving sustainable urban development.
After graduation, students go on to work in a variety of sectors, including central and local government officials, public corporations (e.g., Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH), Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH), Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation (GH), Incheon Housing & City Development Corporation (iH), and local government corporations), government and local research institutes, private sector research labs, construction companies, real estate and planning firms, and engineering companies.
Department of Transportation Engineering
The Department of Transportation Engineering began as a specialization within the Urban Engineering Department in 1988 and was established as an independent department in 2005. Currently, the department has a faculty of eight professors.
Over the years, more than 200 graduates have been active in various sectors, including public service, state-owned enterprises, research institutions, and large corporations. The transportation engineering major focuses on research and education in transportation facility development, traffic operations and design, policymaking and planning, traffic safety, advanced transportation systems logistics, and railway and public transportation fields.
As the only transportation engineering department in Seoul, the department actively promotes domestic and international exchanges to accelerate the development of advanced new technologies.
Department of Landscape Architecture
The Department of Landscape Architecture was established in 1975 and currently offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, as well as a master's program in the Graduate School of Urban Science, providing comprehensive education in landscape planning and design at various levels.
The history of the department parallels the history of landscape architecture in Korea. Through specialized education focusing on environmentally-centered learning and design-oriented training, the department cultivates experts in external space design, including gardens, parks, tourism and recreation facilities, and site landscaping.
After graduation, students go on pursue prominent roles in public offices, public corporations, and various practical and research fields.
Department of Urban Administration
The Department of Urban Administration was established in 1974 with the aim to identify the causes and nature of various urban issues theoretically and provide solutions by cultivating talented individuals equipped with specialized knowledge and skills related to urban administration. To date, it has produced over 1,400 graduates.
To achieve this, the department has a faculty of nine professors who design the curriculum to encompass courses on urban studies, public administration, and broader urban policy theories and knowledge, as well as developing the professional abilities of urban administrators and teaching urban management techniques.
Every year, talented students enroll in the program, and the employment rate of graduates is among the highest in the university. Many graduates pass various national exams and qualifications, actively engaging in diverse fields. With the active support of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the department hosts the Metropolitan Municipal Administration Seminar annually, and graduate students also hold the Urban Administration Forum monthly, actively supporting the academic activities of undergraduate students.
Department of Urban Sociology
The Department of Urban Sociology aims to cultivate practical urban social professionals. An urban social professional is someone who has the ability to understand the various phenomena of urban life from a social science perspective and propose concrete solutions.
The curriculum is structured based on foundational courses aimed at developing information acquisition skills, expressive abilities, investigative skills, and teamwork capabilities, along with specialized educational programs and various special programs designed to train social research professionals, cultural industry experts, and community specialists.
After graduation, students enter professional fields such as planning, research, public relations, and education in public institutions and private companies, particularly becoming experts in cultural industries related to media, advertising, film, and publishing, as well as in community-related fields such as housing, welfare, facilities, and the environment.
Department of Geoinformatics
The Department of Geoinformatics aims to research and develop comprehensive methodologies and technologies aimed at scientifically innovating the acquisition and construction of geographic information, as well as its application in planning, administrative tasks, various decision-making processes, and industrial activities.
To achieve this, the department focuses on training specialized professionals who can take charge of building and applying information systems such as geographic information systems (GIS), land information systems (UIS), remote sensing (RS), and global positioning systems (GPS) in public and industrial sectors.
School of Environmental Engineering
The School of Environmental Engineering was established in 1973 as the Department of Sanitary Engineering, later changing its name to the Department of Environmental Engineering in 1979, and finally to the School of Environmental Engineering in 1997. Currently, a faculty of fourteen professors researches and develops theories and technologies related to water quality, air quality, waste management, soil remediation, water supply and sewage planning, and noise and vibration control, with the aim of training environmental professionals.
Over the years, more than 1,000 graduates have gone on to work in academia, government agencies, research institutes, and corporations, playing leading roles in the field of environmental engineering.
