Leave of absence
Types of absence
- Regular leave of absence: Leave due to personal circumstances, illness (requiring a diagnosis certificate issued by a general hospital for illness lasting 29 days or more), or other unavoidable reasons
- Military service leave of absence: Leave of absence in accordance with Article 23-4 of the Higher Education Act
Leave of absence application
- Regular leave of absence: Available only to students who have paid tuition, within one-fourth of the class days
(It is possible to apply for leave of absence without paying tuition during the initial registration period) - Military service leave of absence: Can be requested at any time upon submitting the enlistment notice
(after the initial registration period, military service leave is only available to students who have paid tuition failure to pay tuition will result in dismissal)
Duration of absence
- Regular leave of absence: Up to 1 year (2 semesters) at a time, within a total of 2 years (4 semesters), and up to 4 years (8 semesters) for combined master’s/doctorate's program.
- Military service leave of absence: The leave period starts from the semester in which the enlistment date or the start of service falls until the semester in which the discharge date or the end of service falls, and this period is not counted as part of the leave of absence duration.
[Military service leave of absence: If the reason for leave ceases (such as being discharged from service), it must be reported to the graduate school within 7 days.]※ If you wish to extend your leave of absence, please submit the leave of absence extension application before the expiration of the current leave period.

※ In the case of military service leave of absence, supporting documents (enlistment notice, military service confirmation) must be submitted to the graduate school.
Leave of absence restrictions
- New students are not allowed to take a leave of absence during the first semester after enrollment.
(However, exceptions apply in cases of military service or long-term illnesses lasting 29 days or more.)
Return to school
Application for return to school
- Students must resume their studies when the leave of absence period has expired or when the reason for the leave no longer exists.
※ If a student does not resume their studies within the designated period, they will be subject to dismissal.
- Students on military service leave of absence may resume studies in the current semester if their discharge date is within one-fourth of the semester.
(If the discharge date is after one-fourth of the class days, the student may resume studies if they can attend more than three-fourths of the class days with leave or attendance permissions from their unit commander.)

Change of major
- If the thesis advisor for master’s or doctorate's programs changes their departmental affiliation or concurrently holds a position in a cooperative program department, a change of major is possible with the approval of the graduate school dean and the UOS president.
