Foreign Language & Comprehensive Exams

Overview

  • UOS students seeking to obtain a master’s or doctorate's degree must pass the foreign language and comprehensive exams as qualification tests.

Eligibility for examination

Foreign language exam
  • Submission: March/September
  • Master’s: English
  • Doctorate's: English is mandatory, and the implementation of a second foreign language will be determined by each department

※ International students must take the Korean language exam, and if they do not use English as a common or everyday language, they may take the English exam.

※ For the foreign language exam, a separate test will not be conducted, and it may be replaced if a certain score is achieved as specified below. Those substituting the foreign language exam with an external certification must submit proof (original documents) via the UOS portal during the application period for the foreign language exam. In addition, students who have earned passing grades (B0 or higher; C0 or higher for arts and contract programs) in graduate English courses offered by the UOS Global Foreign Language Education Center are recognized without requiring a separate application process.

※ Substitute exam scores will be accepted only if the original transcript is from within the last two years from the submission date.

Comprehensive exam (subjects determined by the respective department)

Passing score

  • Foreign language exam: The standards for the passing score and recognition for substitutes will follow Article 38, Paragraph 3 of the UOS Graduate School Implementation Regulations and the substitution recognition minimum score table in Appendix 6
  • Comprehensive exam: A passing score of 70 or above out of 100 for each subject (pass recognized for each subject)

Number of attempts allowed for re-examination

  • No limit.
