Admission

General admission degree programs

Master
  • Individuals who have obtained a bachelor's degree from domestic or foreign universities or those expected to obtain a degree upon completion of the current registered semester
  • Individuals recognized as having equivalent or higher academic qualifications under relevant laws
Eligibility for master's/doctorate's
Support for North Korean defectors
  • Individuals qualified to apply for master's or doctorate's program
  • Individuals registered as North Korean defectors pursuant to the North Korean Defectors Protection and Settlement Support Act

Additional eligibility requirements and submission documents

  • Application form for practical examination for new master's students in the Department of Music (refer to the admission-related forms in the admission guidelines)
  • Practical examination conducted by major

    Vocal Music
    • 1 Opera aria (must be sung in original key and language)
    • 2 foreign art songs in different languages each (e.g. Italian aria + German lied + French chanson)
    Piano Piano
    • All movements of 1 Beethoven sonata
    • 1 free choice piece (excluding etudes)
    Piano Accompaniment
    • 1st movement (fast movement) from a Beethoven sonata
    • 1 etude (by any composer)
    • Sight-reading test (sight-reading score will be provided on the day)
    • Free choice piece - 1 instrumental accompaniment piece (about 10 minutes) * Applicants must arrange their own instrumentalist
    Musical
    • Choose 2 out of the following 3 pieces (must be sung in original key and language): 1 musical uptempo / 1 musical ballad / 1 opera aria
    • Students who want to showcase their special talents are free to do so (e.g. instruments, dance, acting, etc.)
    Composition
    • Submit a portfolio of works
    • Submit scores and audio files of at least 2 recent works
    • However, for electronic music composition, submit at least 1 electronic music work or electronic music-related project
    • Interview: Oral evaluation on overall explanation of one's works and understanding of contemporary music
    Violin
    • One movement from a concerto of free choice
    • 1 free choice piece other than concerto
  • Applicants for vocal music, piano, and composition in the Department of Music must be graduates of a music college (hold a bachelor's degree) or have equivalent academic qualifications. However, applicants for the musical major can apply regardless of their major.
  • On the day of the practical examination, applicants must bring their own accompanist, and if using an accompaniment CD (MR), please submit it separately along with the master's degree program submission documents (application form for practical examination for new master's students in the Department of Music of the General Graduate School) and request its use.
  • Please make sure to check the precautions in the practical examination application form before filling it out and submitting.

Department regulations

  • For students deemed to need prerequisite courses for degree acquisition, prerequisite courses may be designated through a faculty meeting.
  • The minimum graduation credit requirement is 24 credits, but to be eligible for thesis submission, students must complete all major-specific curricula within the department necessary for degree acquisition.

Graduate school operating principles

  • New students in the Musical major whose bachelor's degree is not in Music (not graduates of a music college) must complete prerequisite courses opened and recommended by the Department of Music
  • The curriculum and classes cannot be changed due to personal circumstances (work or other reasons) of students during the semester
